A Kitchen in any household is a place that is directly responsible for the health of persons living in that house. Various dieticians and physician often suggests people to follow balanced diet because dieting habits of any individual is the main reason that often creates various types of health problems for a person. That is why we have said earlier that a kitchen in any household directly responsible for the health of various people living there. Kitchen is also a place where you can find plenty of daily using food items and essential ingredients required for the preparation of various food recipes. Items like Ginger, Garlic, Turmeric, Black Pepper, Salt, Cumin, baking soda, carom seeds, clove, cardamom, vegetables, fruits and oils are must seen items in any kitchen. But do you know that many of these kitchen items can be used as an effective home remedies for treating various types of health problems such as, cough, cold, fever, headache, stomachache, oral infections, skin infections and other similar disorders. Carom or Bishop’s weed ( Ajvayan )

Originated in Egypt and spread in South East and Central Asia, Africa and some part of Europe and
America Carom or Bishop’s weed is an integral part of kitchen in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and other parts of Asia. Well known for culinary use Bishop’s weed also happens to be an effective remedy for a wide range of health problems including, stomachache, headache, indigestion, gastric, cold, flue, oral infections like bronchitis, sore throat and head congestions. Moreover, carom is also very useful in asthma, arthritis, muscular pain, constipation, liver problems, piles, acne, pimples and many other similar problems as well. Loaded with amazing medicinal properties such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal capabilities carom turn into an ultimate home remedy.
Carom or Bishop's weed
Some common use of Carom or Bishop’s Weed as remedy   :

*For stomachache and Gas problem: Mesh bishop’s weed along with black salt and black pepper to make powder and consume this mixture twice daily with warm water to get rid of stomachache and gas problem.
*For Muscular cramps and joint pain: Massage the affected part of the body with bishop’s weed oil to get instant relief from joints and muscular pain.
* For Irregular periods:  Consume bishop’s weed powder with warm milk twice daily to have regularized menstruation cycle.
*For minor burns, eczema & itchiness: Make paste of bishop’s weed and apply it over the affected portion of the body.

Another useful item found in almost every home kitchen is Cardamom, with its versatile taste and amazing
flavor cardamom has a wide variety of culinary uses in our everyday’s life.  Cardamom is an Indian native
which is highly cultivated in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Bhutan and Sri Lanka also apart from India. Pakistan, Bangladesh and India are among those countries where Cardamom is traditionally for day to day food preparations. Cardamom later spread in other parts of the world especially in South & Central America and now Guatemala is among the top producers of Cardamom. Cardamom contains wonderful medicinal properties such as antibacterial, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti cancer, anti asthmatic and antiviral.

Some common use of Cardamom as remedy   :

*For Sneezing and Headache:  Make powder of cardamom seeds and inhale its scant to get relief.
*For Cough:  Make powder of cardamom seeds and take this powder along with clarified butter to get relief from cough.
*Burning sensation during urination: Warm some cardamom and take it with cold milk to get relief instantly.
*For Stomachache: Make powder of cardamom seeds and take this powder along with black salt to get rid of stomachache.

   Catechu ( Kattha )
Originated from India and spread to Iran, China, Gulf region, South East Asia and some other part of the world Catechu is also referred as black Catechu or simply black cutch as well. It is an essential part of traditional ceremonies in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal moreover it is often used for religious purpose as well. Being one of the main ingredients of dyeing industry, Catechu later reached Malaysia, Japan and Indonesia and later travelled to European countries. Beside industrial and culinary uses Catechu has proven itself as an effective remedy for a wide range of health disorders such as dental problems like Pyorrhea, gingivitis and gum problem, oral infections, respiratory problems like bronchitis and asthma, skin infections, constipation, diarrhea, body pain and many others. The medicinal properties that make Catechu a wonderful remedy include anti-inflammatory, astringent, antibacterial, antifungal and antipyretic properties.      
Some common use of Catechu as remedy   :

*For strengthening gums and teeth: Use catechu powder for massaging your teeth and gums once a day
*For Puss in ear:  Pour a little of Catechu powder in the affected year to stop the puss.
*For wounds: Mix some catechu powder in white wax and apply to the wounds for early recovery.

 Black Pepper ( Kali Mirch )

 Black pepper is another important ingredient commonly found in home kitchen especially in Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Vietnam, China and other neighboring countries. In India Black Pepper is an essential kitchen item which is used along with other spices in preparing various food recipes. The black pepper plant contains seeds that are known as peppercorns, these peppercorns are the most important part of the pepper plants. The black pepper has wide range of culinary and medicinal uses; essential oil of black pepper is an important part of Aroma therapy as well.  Black pepper contains several medicinal properties such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant and antiseptic capabilities moreover; it contains various essential nutrients such as Vitamins K, C & Vitamin A, carbohydrates, dietary fibers, Copper, Iron, Calcium, Phosphorus, manganese and Zinc as well. Black Pepper is an ideal remedy for sore throat, cold, flu, cough, skin infections, digestion problems, dental problems, muscular pain, arthritis and various other problems.

Some common use of Black Pepper as remedy   :

*For bleeding Nose: Make powder of black pepper and add some curd and jiggery into it, give it to the affected person to stop the bleeding.
*For Migraine:  Take few pieces of black pepper and pour it into a small quantity of clarified butter and then make powder of the whole, put 2-3 drops of the mixture into your nose to get rid of migraine   
*For cold, flu and cough:  Chew some black pepper along with honey.
*For Hemorrhoids:  Mix some black pepper and black cumin into a teaspoon full of honey and consume this mixture once a day to have relief from hemorrhoids.


In Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri-Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and China Jaggery is a common item used for sweetening various recipes and drinks, it is also a common household
product in African peninsula as well. Jaggery is made from the sugar cane juice and contains many useful medicinal properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, blood purification and body cleansing capabilities. It contains wide varieties of essential nutrients such as Iron, Magnesium, potassium, vitamins and other useful minerals.  There are many health problems for which jaggery acts as an effective remedy, health problems that may be treated with jiggery includes, cold, cough, flu, dental problems, headache, indigestion, gas, bloating, liver problems, asthma, constipation, blood pressure and migraine along with many other problems.

Some common use of Jaggery as remedy: 

*For Bronchitis cold & cough:  Make chikki of jaggery and black sesame specially in cold winter to eat it regularly to avoid problems like cold, cough and bronchitis.
*For Hiccups:  Grind some jiggery (prefer older one) along with dried ginger and inhale it to stop the hiccups.
*For frequent strokes of migraine:  Mix jaggery and clarified butter well and consume this mixture early morning (before sunrise) and at night during the bed time, you need to do it for few weeks to see its result.
*For stomach worms: Consume plain jaggery before going to bed for few days to get rid of stomach worms.
